Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) |
tummy tuck « procedures « home |
The tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) involves the removal of excess fat and skin from the abdomen. If the abdominal muscles are separated at the midline, they are repaired to a more optimal position as well. The tummy tuck is ideal for people that have excess skin, with or without excess fatty tissue in the abdomen. This is often seen in people after significant weight loss or after childbearing. Liposuction is often used in conjunction with the abdominoplasty for improving shape and contour. As opposed to the tiny incisions used for liposuction, the abdominoplasty requires long incisions in the lower abdomen and an incision around the belly button. This results in some permanent scars, although they progressively fade over time.
The mini-abdominoplasty may be appropriate for patients with less significant skin or fat excess in the abdomen. With the mini-abdominoplasty, the lower abdominal scar may be shorter and the scar around the belly button is avoided. Dr. Wilke can discuss which procedure would be best at the time of a consultation.
Abdominoplasty is done under a general anesthesia, but in most cases can still be done on an outpatient basis. A compression garment is used and drains are in place for typically one week. Most patients are fairly limited in their activity for at least 2 weeks after surgery. Return to strenuous physical activities may take 6-8 weeks.
